PAGASA, PDRRMO launch Weather Training for Disaster Preparedness

As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and climate resilience at the local level, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), headed by Robert L. Corpuz, in partnership with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), conducted a capacity-building activity at the Highlander Hotel, Solano on June 26-27, 2025.

The two-day training, supported by the Provincial Government of Nueva Vizcaya (PGNV) under the leadership of Governor Atty. Jose “Jing” V. Gambito, is designed to equip personnel from the PDRRMO, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (MDRRMOs), and select Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) offices with foundational knowledge on weather monitoring and forecasting. Participants from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Education (DepEd) also took part in the training.

The training focuses on enhancing participants’ understanding of various weather systems and forecasting techniques, which are essential in developing timely, science-based strategies for disaster preparedness and response. Leading the technical discussions is Mr. Romeo B. Ganal Jr., Meteorologist and Chief of PAGASA Northern Luzon Operations, who provides in-depth insights on key meteorological concepts, with a strong emphasis on improving the participants’ familiarity with the behavior and impact of diverse weather systems.

Participants underwent hands-on training that combined discussions with practical application, allowing them to observe how to interpret cloud formations and assess visibility conditions. They also had the opportunity to measure rainfall using a rain gauge, gaining valuable experience in basic weather monitoring techniques. He explained that this instrument plays a vital role in collecting rainfall data, which is essential in determining a rainfall advisory or signal warning, as well as in monitoring localized weather conditions.

This drive reflects the dedication of Governor Gambito’s administration to proactive governance and disaster risk reduction by empowering frontline disaster management personnel with technical knowledge and tools necessary to interpret weather data more accurately. Such capability is expected to play a role in minimizing the impact of weather-related hazards, reinforcing timely warnings, and promoting community safety across the province. /jmcb
