Governor Attorney Jose V. Gambito is spearheading an initiative to institutionalize organic farming across the province of Nueva Vizcaya, aiming to transform it into a leading hub for sustainable agriculture. This ambitious plan seeks to set a precedent for other regions in the Philippines, emphasizing the importance of organic practices for both public health and environmental sustainability.
In an interview , Gov. Gambito highlighted the importance of this transition, stating, “It is time to convert Nueva Vizcaya into an organic agriculture province. This initiative is not only essential for the physical health of Novo Vizcayanos but also vital for the health of our land.” His vision encompasses a holistic approach to agriculture that prioritizes environmental sustainability and public health.
While there are already areas and farmers in Nueva Vizcaya practicing organic agriculture, the governor is eager to see all municipalities embrace and institutionalize these practices. He believes that a unified approach will maximize the benefits of organic farming across the province. “We want every town to adopt organic farming as a standard practice,” he emphasized.
Nueva Vizcaya has already made history as the first province to join the League of Organic Agriculture Municipalities, Cities, and Provinces, a significant milestone that underscores its commitment to organic practices. The governor’s plans include launching a pilot organic farming project in the provincial government’s 5 hectare lot in Brgy. Bagahabag,Solano which will serve as a demo farm for the rest of the province.
Gov. Gambito elaborated on the benefits of organic farming, stating, “By adopting organic methods, we can ensure that our future generations inherit fertile lands, free from harmful chemicals. This is a crucial step towards sustainable development in our agricultural sector.”
To support this initiative, the provincial government is prepared to offer incentives to municipalities that implement comprehensive organic farming practices. This support aims to encourage local governments to adopt and promote organic agriculture, making it more accessible for farmers and communities.
Governor Gambito plans to present this organic farming program directly to Department of Agriculture (DA) Sec. I’m sorry Francisco Tiu Laurel, who is scheduled to visit the province this week.
As the province embarks on this transformative journey, Gov. Gambito hopes that other provinces will be inspired to adopt similar initiatives. “We are setting a standard for sustainable agriculture in the Philippines,” he remarked. “Together, we can create a healthier nation and a more sustainable future for our farmers and consumers alike.” (RMI)
