The provincial government of Nueva Vizcaya, led by Governor Atty. Jose V. Gambito, is gearing up for a province-wide celebration of Indigenous Peoples Month. Organized by the Provincial Tourism and Culture Office (PTCO), this event is dedicated to honoring and preserving the rights and traditions of indigenous cultural communities (ICCs) in accordance with Republic Act No. 8371, also known as the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act.
Scheduled for November 9 at the Carlos M. Padilla Convention Center, the celebration will serve as a platform to strengthen bonds and promote the rich cultural heritage of Nueva Vizcaya’s indigenous communities. Through public awareness and education, the event seeks to preserve and protect the indigenous knowledge of these communities, with a series of lectures and discussions planned throughout the day.
Governor Gambito emphasized the significance of the celebration, stating, “This event is not just a celebration of culture; it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to uphold the rights and dignity of our indigenous peoples. By recognizing their contributions, we foster unity and appreciation for the diverse heritage that enriches our province.”
Former Governor Ruth R. Padilla, who currently serves as a consultant on indigenous peoples’ matters for the provincial government, highlighted one of the program’s key events: a parade of traditional attires. Representatives from various indigenous groups will showcase the native attire of their respective cultural communities, offering a visual feast of the province’s diverse cultural tapestry.
In the afternoon, participants will engage in discussions covering a range of topics, including issues related to ancestral domains. Board Member Castillo B. Tidang Jr., the Provincial Indigenous Peoples’ Mandatory Representative (IPMR), will also present his accomplishment report, detailing efforts and achievements in advocating for indigenous rights within the province.
The event will be graced by the presence of Senator Robinhood C. Padilla, who serves as the guest speaker. As the chair of the Senate Committee on Cultural Communities and Muslim Affairs, Senator Padilla is expected to share insights and legislative updates pertinent to the indigenous peoples’ communities. /RMI
