The provincial government of Nueva Vizcaya, under the leadership of Governor Atty. Jose V. Gambito, is partnering with Japan-based Green Carbon Inc. to implement a methane reduction project aimed at revolutionizing rice farming in the region. The initiative will introduce the Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) technology, a water-saving method that helps farmers reduce irrigation water consumption without compromising rice yield.
Maria Theresa M. Jaraza, Project Development Manager of Green Carbon Inc., along with the company’s Japanese COO, Takato Senoo, and their Japanese colleagues, made a courtesy call to the office of the governor last Friday. They were warmly welcomed by Provincial Administrator Jovito Celestino and Provincial Planning and Development Officer, Engr. Edgardo Sabado.
Jaraza said that the project will initially be implemented in the municipalities of Solano, Villaverde, Bayombong, and Dupax del Norte. Demo sites have already been established, involving 18 farmers, including a demo site at the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) in Bayombong.
She explained that Nueva Vizcaya was chosen for this project because Green Carbon Inc.‘s objectives align closely with Governor Gambito’s vision for the province. “This program will not only assist farmers in increasing their production but will also contribute to skills development and capacity building. Most importantly, it will help mitigate the effects of climate change,” she stated.
A significant aspect of this partnership is that the provincial government will not incur any expenses for the project. Green Carbon Inc. will shoulder all costs, while the provincial government’s role will involve providing necessary data, identifying suitable sites, and coordinating with local farmers.
Governor Gambito expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to transform agricultural practices in Nueva Vizcaya. “Our collaboration with Green Carbon Inc. is a testament to our commitment to sustainable development and climate action. We are optimistic that this initiative will bring long-term benefits to our farmers and the environment,” he said.
The AWD technology, which is set to be a game-changer in rice cultivation, underscores Nueva Vizcaya’s proactive approach to addressing global environmental challenges while enhancing local agricultural productivity. /RMI
