Governor Atty. Jose V. Gambito has reiterated his proposal for a co-management partnership for the Weighing Bridge in Barangay Calitlitan, Aritao. He made this appeal during the recent Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) meeting held at the Lower Magat Eco-Tourism Park in Diadi.
Currently, the Weighing Bridge in Barangay Calitlitan is managed by the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Governor Gambito emphasized the readiness of the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) to work closely with the national government to ensure the efficient and continuous operation of the Weighing Bridge. He stressed that this partnership is vital for the strict enforcement of the Anti-Overloading Law, which is essential in protecting public infrastructure and ensuring road safety.
The governor highlighted the persistent issue of overloaded trucks, noting that repeated violations of the Anti-Overloading Law have resulted in the rapid deterioration of national highways and frequent traffic congestion, often caused by accidents involving overloaded vehicles.
Gambito also lamented that because of the recurring traffic jams within Nueva Vizcaya—primarily due to vehicular accidents caused by overloaded trucks—the province is being labeled as the “traffic capital,” a negative image that does not reflect the true character of Nueva Vizcaya. He emphasized that it is not the residents of Nueva Vizcaya who are responsible for this situation, but rather violators of the Anti-Overloading Law passing through the province.
He further explained that with the strict implementation of the Anti-Overloading Law, the national government could save significantly on road maintenance costs, as roads would be less prone to damage. Effective enforcement would also help prevent severe traffic congestion and reduce the number of accidents linked to overloading.
“Strict enforcement of the Anti-Overloading Law can greatly help the national government save funds. If our roads are not easily damaged by overloaded trucks, there will be less need for frequent repairs, and the money saved can be used for other important projects. Well-maintained and safe roads will benefit more people in the long run,” Gambito said.
Governor Gambito expressed hope that the request for co-management would be granted, highlighting that local officials are in the best position to understand and respond to the unique problems in their respective areas. He expressed confidence that with the support of concerned agencies, Nueva Vizcaya can create safer and more orderly roads for motorists and commuters. He called on all stakeholders to work together in upholding the law and protecting the welfare and reputation of the province and the region. /RMI
