PLGU looks into welfare of left-behind children by OFWs

On October 4, 2024, the Provincial Employment Service Division (PESD), led by PESO Manager Dolly Rose C. Minas and represented by Sir Philip John R. Flora, held the 3rd Quarter meeting of the Nueva Vizcaya Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) Council at Ituy Hall, Capitol Compound. The council discussed strategies on how to assist active OFWs in accessing government services, ensuring their efforts to support their families are effectively realized. The meeting was chaired by Board Member Elma Pinao-an Lejao and included attendees such as PPDO Engr. Maria Jonem P. Gacad, OWWA Officer-in-Charge for programs and services Ms. Melanie G. Gapasen, and NGO Representative Pastor Roger M. Angyab.

BM Lejao emphasized the urgent need to focus on active Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families, particularly the children left behind in the Philippines. “What Governor Gambito wants is to focus on the active OFWs, especially those who have children here. We need to ensure that these children do not fall in with bad influences, so their parents’ efforts will not go to waste,” BM Lejao stated.

The Provincial Employment Services Division (PESD) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) are poised to complement each other’s efforts, ensuring that OFWs receive the necessary assistance both while abroad and upon their return. Community members are encouraged to visit the OWWA Facebook page for updates and resources.

Engr. Jonem proposed that PESD prepare guidelines to help barangays identify and support active OFWs. Additionally, Pastor Angyab suggested assigning barangays the task of monitoring these workers through dedicated barangay desks, creating a structured support system.

Another significant initiative discussed was the development of programs for the sons and daughters of OFWs, particularly focusing on out-of-school youth. Plans for retreats and educational activities aim to provide guidance and support for these young individuals, helping them navigate their futures.

The council plans to reconvene in November for further discussions, with a special OFW Family event scheduled for December to honor and celebrate the contributions of OFWs. This ongoing commitment to support OFWs and their families reflects a concerted effort to ensure their well-being and success.

Governor Gambito’s commitment to active Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families is evident through a range of government programs and services. By partnering with the Provincial Employment Service Division (PESD) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), these initiatives are designed to open up new and promising opportunities for both OFWs and their children. #jmcb
