On October 2, 2024, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENARO), led by Forester Tito A. Tanguilig, met with the Provincial Environmental Awareness and Education Team (PEAET) and Technical Working Group (TWG) at the Nueva Vizcaya Livelihood and Pasalubong Center, Bayombong, to discuss and review updates on the “Pasiklaban sa Proyektong Makakalikasan” winners and finalize plans for the Environmental Awareness Month celebration scheduled for November 18-22, 2024.

Key discussions revolved around budget allocations, required resources for activities, and the roles of different offices concerned. Last year’s winners showcased their projects utilizing their cash prizes, including the Kasibu National Agricultural School’s “Project Hydroharvest,” which established a hydroponic lettuce system. Project leader Mr. Robert Dipagan emphasized that profits from sales have funded further seedlings and training for students.

Solano High School, recognized in the Lowland Category for their Project “Badu”, presented their initiative of creating tote bags from secondhand clothes, funded by their prize to purchase 12 sewing machines. Dr. Elsa Cajucom of Saint Mary’s University suggested that winners provide financial statements to ensure accountability in utilizing their funds for intended projects.

The proposed activities for this year’s Environmental Awareness Month largely reflect last year’s initiatives, with some enhancements. The next PEAET meeting is set on October 11 to finalize plans and budgetary requirement. /jmcb
