DOH releases guidelines on the use of face shields

In anticipation of the post-holiday surge of Corona Virus Disease – 19 (COVID-19) cases, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF) mandated guidelines on the use of face shields in all public areas outside of residence through Department of Health (DOH) Department Order No. 2020-0534.According to DOH Secretary Francisco T. Duque III, wearing of full coverage face shields in addition to face masks shall be observed in enclosed public places, schools, workplaces, food establishments, malls, public markets and other business establishments, public transport and terminals, place of worship and other public places wherein physical distancing is not possible.The guideline exempt individuals from wearing of face shields including neonates and children below two years old, individuals who are incapacitated, unconscious or with medical condition to put on and remove face shield on their own, individuals who engages in sports or physical activities provided that social distancing in open spaces is observed.

Individuals who engage in strenuous work such as in construction, those whose ability or safety is affected through the use of face shield, individuals who operates transport vehicles, passenger of motor vehicles wearing helmets with full face visors and individuals who dine in public places but are directed to use face shield before and after work or in transit.

Face shields shall also meet minimum criteria as adapted from recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) based on the mode of transmission of the current pandemic. It must be made of clear plastic and provides good visibility, covers the face including the jawline and the chin. Face shields shall also be disposable or shall be regularly disinfected.

On December 31, 2020, DOH reported 1,541 new cases, 14 new deaths and 296 total recoveries. #krizel
