The Provincial Evaluation Team (PET) conducted its on-site evaluation for the Search for “Makakalikasang Barangay” 2025 in Barangay Lublub, Alfonso Castañeda on October 23–24, 2025.

Among the 6 barangays in the municipality, Barangay Lublub was chosen to represent Alfonso Castañeda in this year’s provincial search. The activity aims to assess barangay compliance with Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, and to encourage communities to strengthen their environmental protection and waste management practices.

During the evaluation, the PET reviewed the barangay’s documentation and monitoring reports and conducted a thorough site inspection. The team observed that while Barangay Lublub has implemented several commendable environmental initiatives, there remain areas for improvement.

For instance, some labeled waste bins were still visible in key areas, but many labels had faded and now require replacement. The team also noted that the barangay’s greenhouse garden, once recognized as a model of sustainability, has not been properly maintained in recent months.

Despite these concerns, the evaluators acknowledged Barangay Lublub’s creative use of recycled materials. One highlight was the barangay’s initiative to use plastic bottles in crafting large parols (Christmas lanterns). This project was introduced across different puroks through a Parol-Making Contest, with incentives awarded to the best-performing groups.

Throughout the evaluation, Barangay Lublub officials showed eagerness and commitment in improving their environmental programs. They attentively listened to the evaluators’ feedback, took detailed notes, and expressed their willingness to implement the recommended enhancements.

According to PET members, the purpose of the search goes beyond recognition. It is also meant to “gisingin ang mga barangay,” to awaken the collective awareness of local officials and residents, inspiring them to sustain and continuously improve their solid waste management efforts.

The evaluation team commended Barangay Lublub for its enthusiasm, cooperation, and proactive attitude toward learning. They expressed optimism that the barangay will take the recommendations positively and further strengthen its environmental initiatives in the coming months. #jmcb
