BM Lejao pushes medical scholarship

Board Member Elma Pinao-an Lejao is pushing for the passage of a localized version of Republic Act No. 11509, known as the “Doktor Para sa Bayan Act”, which establishes and funds a Medical Scholarship and Return Service Program for Deserving Students.

“The proposed ordinance will help address the perennial problem among the hospitals being managed and operated by the Provincial Government of Nueva Vizcaya (PGNV) of having no applicants or takers to their vacant physician positions”, BM Lejao rationalized.

“It also echoes the raison d’être of the said national law, i.e., to ensure the availability of doctors who will provide quality basic, promotive, preventive, and curative health care services in every municipality in the country, especially the underserved, remote, economically underdeveloped, distressed, conflict-afflicted, and geographically disadvantaged areas”, she explained.

The legislative measure, which has already undergone its first reading during the en banc session of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan presided over by Vice Governor Jose V. Gambito on November 21, 2022 at the Provincial Capitol, is in sync with the August body’s mandate that includes establishing a scholarship fund for the poor but deserving students in schools located within the province or for students residing therein.

“It will further expand the coverage of the PGNV’s existing Sagut Scholarship Program, which is currently limited to courses available at the Nueva Vizcaya State University, also to include Doctor of Medicine that requires return service”, she added.
