PA ventures on innovative awards system

Provincial Administrator Maybelle Dumlao-Sevillena introduced an innovative morale-boosting employee reward and recognition activity that highlighted the relatively colorful Christmas program of their office held on December 22, 2021.

On top of the usual awards for outstanding office employees, she also gave some certificates recognizing the distinctive contributions and traits of each of her staff vis-a-vis their office’s programs, projects, and activities, i.e., Best in Customer-Centricity, Pinnacle Performer, Engagement Champion, Ace of the Initiative, Brainiac, Happy and Present Every Day, Rookie Star, Social Contributor, Brightest Beginner, Exceeding Everest, Cloud 9 Collaborator, Eccentric Performer, Dedicated Employee, Collared Diamond. and Picasso of the Year, among others.

The awardees were also given some cash prizes.

Last December 10, on the occasion of the Administrative Officers’ Workshop and Year-end Assessment activities held at the Nueva Vizcaya Conference Center, LMET Park, Diadi, the Provincial Human Resource Management Office headed by PHRM Officer Ma. Carla Lucia M. Torralba also awarded certificates of recognition to certain outstanding employees for their invaluable support to the programs of the Provincial Government of Nueva Vizcaya, particularly in the realms of administrative service and human resource management.

PA Sevillena, known as a staunch supporter of the Civil Service Commission’s PRogram on Awards and Incentives for Service Excellence (PRAISE) and its overarching Program to Institutionalize Meritocracy and Excellence in Human Resource Management (PRIME-HRM), said that she just wanted her staff to know that she is indeed closely paying attention to all of them and appreciating their efforts as well.

In general, PRAISE provides both monetary and non-monetary awards and incentives to recognize, acknowledge and reward productive, creative, innovative, and ethical behavior of employees through formal and informal modes. PRIME-HRM is a mechanism that empowers government agencies by developing their human resource management competencies, systems, and practices toward HR excellence. It encompasses the four HR systems, namely: recruitment, selection, and placement; learning and development; performance management; and rewards and recognition.

A Harvard Business School research shows that “Companies with strong recognition programs enjoy increased productivity, lower job turnover, and greater returns on investment than other companies or organizations in the same industries. Compensation may provide monetary satisfaction, but it doesn’t feed employees’ underlying desire to feel valued and appreciated.”
