Law imposes limits on children riding vehicles
After President Rodrigo R. Duterte signed Republic Act 112291, otherwise known as “Child Safety in Motor Vehicle Act,” any child aged 12 below or 4’11’’ feet in height and below can no longer sit in front of vehicles with running engine, or while being transported on any road, street or highway, unless the child meets the height requirement and complies with the regular seat belt requirement.
Under the law, the vehicle should also have a child restraint system, like car seat, car bed or a device that is capable of accommodating a child occupant in a sitting or supine position.
Violators will be fined for up to P5,000 along with the cancellation of their driver’s license.
Meanwhile, the law is limited only to private vehicles, but it also recognizes the need to study and determine appropriate safety measures for children being transported in public utility vehicles. #mccd
