In celebration of Environmental Awareness and Education Month this November, 13 municipalities in Nueva Vizcaya are competing in the “Makakalikasang Barangay 2025” search, honoring barangays that demonstrate excellence in environmental responsibility, waste management, and sustainable practices.
The participating municipalities include Bayombong (Busilac and Salvacion), Bagabag (Tuao North), Villaverde (Cabuluan and Poblacion), Quezon (Runruno and Darubba), Ambaguio (Tiblac), and Diadi (Butao) from the northern district, and Bambang (San Antonio North), Dupax del Sur (Gabut), Dupax del Norte (Ineangan), Aritao (Canabuan and Tucanon), Sta. Fe (Tactac and Balete), Alfonso Castañeda (Lublub), and Kasibu (Malabing and Poblacion) from the southern district. The contest features 8 upland barangays and 11 lowland barangays, competing under separate categories to showcase their unique approaches to environmental challenges.
The Provincial Evaluation Team (PET), composed of representatives from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), Provincial Integrated Health Office (PIHO), and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENARO), will assess barangays under the upland and lowland categories. Northern district evaluations were held last October 13–17, while southern district assessments took place October 21–28. The final round for the top 5 barangays will be conducted November 10–14, aligning with the national celebration of Environmental Awareness and Education Month.
This year’s search highlights the implementation and sustainability of Ecological Solid Waste Management (ESWM) in accordance with Republic Act 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, which mandates proper segregation, collection, and disposal of solid waste to safeguard public health and the environment. Evaluators will also consider the Barangay Ecological Solid Waste Management (BESWM) programs, recognizing barangays that have institutionalized effective local strategies for waste reduction, recycling, and community engagement.
Municipal local government units (MLGUs) were encouraged to nominate one upland and one lowland barangay, showcasing diverse approaches to environmental challenges across the province. Under the leadership of Governor Atty. Jose V. Gambito, Nueva Vizcaya continues to champion environmental sustainability, one barangay at a time, inspiring communities to adopt eco-friendly practices and contribute to a greener, healthier province. #jmcb
