As some major cities and provinces in the country launches the “Juan Konek Project,” the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) passed a resolution on April 3 authorizing Governor Carlos M. Padilla to sign a Memorandum of Agreement between the province and the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) relative to the “Juan Konek Project.”

The “Juan Konek Project” is a free Wi-Fi internet access in public places. This project aims to accelerate the government’s efforts in enhancing internet accessibility for Filipinos to accelerate economic, social and educational opportunities in order to address the growing “digital divide” (or gap between those with access to modern technology and those with restricted access). Internet connectivity jumpstarts economic development and will subsequently lead to increasing incomes in the underserved and un-served areas.

This project is envisioned to provide free Wi-Fi in public places nationwide in government offices including public schools, libraries, rural health units, police stations, state colleges, public transport terminals, seaports and airports.

As this project is beneficial to the province, the SP also requested the DICT to include the establishment of the said project in the Municipal Local Government Units of the province where most constituents converge. #bg
